Pied Monarch (Arses kaupi).
The pied monarch is a species of bird in the monarch-flycatcher family Monarchidae. It is endemic to the Wet Tropics of Queensland, Australia. This bird has a small range and is often found on the boundaries of protected rainforests in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. It prefers secondary forests and is considered to occur at low densities throughout its range. Although much of its habitat is protected now, the fragility of the ecosystems it inhabits is a concern. Reforesting land that borders known habitat will eventually lead to larger areas of secondary forests and secure the pied monarch's future.
It is illustrated here attending to a nest entangled between two rainforest vines. Its nests are often covered with lichens that are collected during their curious feeding method of hopping vertically up a tree.
